For many visitors, Bangkok equals retail therapy. With markets and malls in abundance, Thailand’s capital city offers something for shopaholics of all tastes and budgets. Love shopping malls? While there are plenty of shopping malls in Bangkok to choose from, Siam Paragon should not be missed.
Hugely popular – especially among Thais and visitors with cash to splash – Siam Paragon is home to more than 250 shops, selling everything from high-end fashion to everyday homewares. Perhaps best known for its luxury brands, Siam Paragon also features Southeast Asia’s largest aquarium, a 16-screen Cineplex, and a huge food court serving up a comprehensive selection of world cuisine.
If shopping malls aren’t really your thing, head to Chatuchak Weekend Market for something completely different. Encompassing almost 142,000 square metres, Chatuchak Market sells anything and everything, allowing shoppers to get lost in market heaven. From handicrafts and ceramics, to clothes and collectibles, Chatuchak Market has it all. For the best price, don’t forget to haggle with a smile!
Famously referred to as the ‘centre of the backpacking universe’, Khao San Road draws travellers from near and far. Jam packed within this 1km strip of road are guest houses, hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants, internet cafés, travel agents, massage parlours, tattoo shops and market stalls. If it sounds chaotic, that’s because it usually is.
Come to Khao San Road to meet other travellers and exchange stories. Check out this famous road’s laid-back atmosphere and revel in its infectious party spirit. But remember, this is not all Bangkok has to offer. Be sure to step away from Khao San to experience ‘real’ Thai culture.
Bangkok has a lot of temples. For a short weekend stint in the city, it’s probably best to tick off some of the more memorable ones. Situated on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun – known locally as Wat Chaeng – is one of the most spectacular temples you will see in Bangkok. While it may be known as the Temple of the Dawn, Wat Arun really shines at sunset – so it’s best to visit then, or early in the morning, before the crowds.
Another must-see temple in Bangkok is Wat Phra Kaew, located within the grounds of the Grand Palace. Take time out to experience the dazzling Grand Palace, before setting your sights on Wat Phra Kaew. Also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, this is regarded as the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand - and it is totally unforgettable!
